Welcome The Chairman welcomed Huw Gwillim, Food, Fisheries and Market Development Division, Welsh Government (WG) to the meeting. 1. Apologies for absence Apologies were received from Huw Evans, Will Haresign, Wynfford James and Lionel Walford. 2. Declaration of Interests Declarations of interests were noted as follows: Credit Control - John Brereton and Wyn Williams NHS Trusts (Wales) Meat Purchasing – John Collins. 3. To approve and adopt the minutes of the Board meeting held on Friday 4 March 2011 (HCC 387) The minutes of the Board meeting held on Friday 4 March 2011 were taken as read, adopted and signed by the Chairman. HCC 396 Board Meeting 6.5.11 - Minutes 1 (HCC 396) 4. Matters Arising EID A positive industry meeting hosted by HCC to discuss issues relating to sheep identification had been held on the 12 April 2011. A follow up meeting would be held on the 10 May 2011 at VION, St Merryn, Merthyr Tydfil. Farming Connect Red Meat Development Programme (FC RMDP) The Industry Development Manager informed that the tender application for the delivery of the above to commence from the 1 September 2011 for a period of two years had been submitted by the Consortium (HCC, IBERS, Bangor University and Coleg Sir Gâr) to the WG for consideration. The Consortium along with other contenders had been invited to present proposals to WG officials on the 23 May 2011. Credit Control Item withheld – commercial in confidence. Proposed Membership of the HCC R&D Advisory Sub Committee The Chairman updated the meeting on the responses received in relation to inviting new members on the Committee: Accepted Prof Michael Abberton – Crop Genetics, Genomics and Breeding Research Division, IBERS Mr Peter Davies – NFU Cymru Livestock Board Chairman Mr David Lloyd – Director, Food Centre Wales Prof Nigel Scollan - Animal and Microbial Sciences, IBERS Red Meat Industry (Wales) Measure 2010 It was noted that work was progressing on drafting the Statutory Instrument relating to the above. Pigs As an action from the previous Board meeting, a press release had been issued on the costs of production relating to pigs. Statistics indicated that the volume of pork sales in Wales had increased by almost nine per cent in 2010 to 17,000 tonnes. Feed prices for pig farmers had HCC 396 Board Meeting 6.5.11 - Minutes 2 (HCC 396) increased significantly with the average pig producer failing to meet their costs of production. Recent calculations indicated that the average cost of production for British pig producers was 164p/kg deadweight whilst the average deadweight pig price received in return was approximately 135p/kg. 5. HCC Reports a. Activities Report (HCC 388) The above was taken as read. In addition to the content within the report, the Board were updated on the following: Communications PETA Advertising The Board complemented the Executive on the prompt response to the PETA advert that appeared in Merthyr Tydfil highlighting that “Feeding kids meat is child abuse”. A response was awaited on HCC’s complaint to the Advertising Standards Authority on the issue. Market Development Retail The news that Waitrose had agreed to stock branded Welsh Lamb at all of
